New toys, for me?

So, on Friday, my desktop broke, and I was told it would take a while to get it back up and running. So, since my laptop was old & junky (and I need something portable for school & travel), I bought a new laptop over the weekend. I’ve also been super busy that instead of a druid-related post, I’m going to talk about the computer that I got.

It’s a Samsung, 15.4″, with an i5 processor (2.26 Ghz), nvidea Geforce video card (GT 310M, 512 MB), with 4 gigs of Ram.  It’s really light & portable (5.7 lbs) for being somewhat large (it’s much better than my old 17″ brick of a laptop that I used to have). Though, compared to the size of the screen that I use for my desktop, it’s pretty small! It still runs WoW well enough to raid. I’ve also been able to actually carry it around in my backpack to get work done on it when I go to campus. This will be nice for writing my dissertation, since it lets me work in coffee shops, too!

Here’s what it looks like:

Ooooh. WoW on a laptop that you also intend to use on campus and for your dissertation. That’s dangerous.

Hope you’re more disciplined than me. ;-)

    Shiny.

I’m actually starting college next semester, and I’m looking for a good laptop that I can use for classes and still run WoW. I might look into that. Hrmmm…

Looks nice! If you connect it to your desktop monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers, you can probably simulate your old experience rather accurately :)

Yeah, but I can’t unplug anything from the desktop until we re-install the OS this weekend, lol.

If I had two grand to spend on a computer I still wouldn’t buy a Mac. For half the money you can get something comparable or better.

Hope the new laptop works well, and yeah, coffee is indispensable when writing thesis/dissertation. Good luck. You should try installing Ubuntu on the laptop :P

I have to say, I’m a netbook person, myself.

15.7″ screens and 5.7lbs seems like a “car laptop” to me. Aka, you’ll carry it with you, as long as your car does most of the carrying.

Once you get down to about 3.0lbs with a 7hr battery life, the way you use your laptop changes completely.

Instead of working at a coffee shop, you’ll be working under a tree, in the middle of a park, or on a picnic table, by the harbor, while ships sail past you.

Yes, it’s still on the large-side, but I CAN take it with me now, whereas I couldn’t take my desktop or the 17″ brick that I had before. It’s a more mobile WoW machine. lol.

I hope you’re running a 64bit OS to take advantage of the full 4 gigs of ram. :)

But the important question is, “How well does it play WoW?”
