Symbiosis is a new spell we get at level 87. When you cast it on another player, you gain one of their spells, and they gain one of yours. This duplicates the spell, so that both players keep their existing tools. The person you cast it on will need to drag the new symbiosis spell button to their spell bar.
Symbiosis addon management tools:
I haven’t tested any of the symbiosis addons, but here are some options of things that may be helpful to you.
- Get an addon such as “symbioteller” to help you remember who gets what. The symbioteller addon adds text to the symbiosis tooltip to tell you mouse-over someone that says what you will get & what you give to them. Helpful if you run a lot of small groups or PUGs for remembering what class gets what spell.
- The addon “symbiosis” has a lot more features for helping you remember when to cast it, automatically telling people you cast symbiosis on them, etc.
Here are copies of the tables of symbiosis spells. They can also be found at Sunfyre’s Nest with mouse-over text.
What you gain from other classes when you cast Symbiosis:
Class | Balance | guardian | feral | restoration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Death Knight | Anti-magic shell | Bone Shield | Death Coil | Icebound Fortitude |
| Hunter | Misdirection | Ice Trap | Play Dead | Deterrence |
| Mage | Mirror Image | Mage Ward | Frost Nova | Ice Block |

| Shaman | Purge | Lightning Shield | Feral Spirit | Spiritwalker Grace |
| Warlock | Unending Resolve | Life Tap | Soul Swap | Demonic Circle: Teleport |
| Warrior | Intervene | Spell Reflection | Shattering Blow | Intimidating Roar |
What you give to other classes:
Class | Spec A | Spec B |
|---|---|---|
| Death Knight | Tank: Might of Ursoc | DPS: Mushrooms |
| Hunter | All specs: Dash | |
| Mage | All specs: Healing Touch | |
| Monk | Tank: Survival Instincts | Healer: Entangling roots DPS: Bear Hug |
| Paladin | Tank: Barkskin | Healer: Rebirth DPS: Wrath |
| Priest | Healer: Cyclone | DPS: Tranquility |
| Rogue | All specs: Growl (taunt w/survivability bonus) | |
| Shaman | Healer: prowl | DPS: Solar Beam |
| Warlock | All specs: Rejuvenation | |
| Warrior | Tanks: Savage Defense | DPS: Stampeding shout |
Who should you cast it on?
They nerfed what tanks get, so at this point, it doesn’t much matter who you cast it on. When running PUGs with players you don’t know, assume that the other player won’t use it and just cast it on whoever gives you the best benefit. (I’ll usually go for iceblock if a mage is available). With the changes, this is mostly a PvP ability with limited PvE use overall.
See more for resto druids in the updated healing guide.

I had someone tell me that warriors will get Savage Defense, and not FR, via Symbiosis. Is this the case? Which one is, in fact, correct?
I put it in as a question mark. Some digging around indicates that FR is found in all the guides, except that not all the guides got updated every patch. So, it’s possible that at some point, they changed it. I can find a wowDB entry for symbiosis: SD but not symbiosis: FR, so that leads me to believe that it was changed at some point.
We have a totally uselles lvl 87 spell now, ty blizz. They should add a bonus to it for using it like 1% mana for the druid or something than we have a reason for using it. I cba to use it now anymore (hard to use anyway, people wont wait in pugs, they just run off and start combat) Mushrooms is totally uselles also.

[...] I’m nothing if not resistant to change, and true to form I’d been mostly “meh” regarding Symbiosis since MoP was released. So much so that I hadn’t even placed it on my bar until recently. I’ve fallen back into my PVP Healing ways, running BGs as Resto the past couple of days. And I’ve had a bit of a change of heart regarding Symbiosis because of it. As Feral I wasn’t overly excited about any of the options available to the spec, and especially in the PVE setting. But I have an entirely different feeling as Resto where many of the abilities are quite useful in PV…. [...]
