PTR patch notes for 3.2.2 – Moonkin/Feral PvP buffs

From the PTR patch notes:

# Balance
* Moonkin Form: This form now also reduces the damage the druid takes while stunned by 15%.

* Typhoon: The knockback distance from this spell has been increased to match Thunderstorm.

These moonkin changes are entirely designed around PvP, as they are fixes designed to increase moonkin’s overall survivability. I’m interested to see how this works out overall. It’s not going to fix all the problems, but it’s going to help prevent the moonkin from totally getting stunlocked & burst down so fast, and will give them at least some fighting chance to better contribute with the larger knockback distance. At the very least, druids with moonkin PvP gear should try to get out on the PTR and give things a try. They are also planning to fix the balance of power tooltip (thanks!).

# Feral Combat
* Predatory Strikes: This talent now also causes the druid’s finishing moves to provide a 7/13/20% chance per combo point to make the next Nature spell with a cast time below 10 seconds instant cast.

This also has to be a PvP change, designed to make it easier for feral druids to shift out of form and heal. At 5 combo points, this provides a 100% chance, but it makes it so that resto druids & moonkin aren’t going to necessarily want to dip into feral for it just for instant heals, and feral druids won’t be able to just do 1 or 2 combo points for a reliable free heal, either. I think it’s a neat mechanic, and very similar to something that enhancement shaman have.

It would also be nice if they provided a little more defense for feral and balance druids shifting out to humanoid form to heal, as they do for resto druids who shift out of tree form. However, maximizing moonkin’s ability to stay in moonkin form, and shortening the time needed for feral to spend out of cat/bear form are neat changes overall.

Are healer classes more balanced in 3.2?

So, it’s now been a little over a week since all the shaman & paladin healing changes went live.

Lodur does a great job over at World of Matticus explaining the new changes to shaman healing, and how that puts them at a really great place right now (capable of filling raid healing, spot healing, & tank healing roles). Resto shaman have a really good toolset, and simply the increased range on chain heal was enough to make it  a really great tool again, with the increased healing done something that makes it even better.

Even though I mostly shelved my shaman when Wrath came out, I still follow the developments in the other healing communities. It is easier to misunderstand how other healers work than to actually know what’s going on.

A paladin’s perspective on the reversal of roles? One paladin on talks how 3.2 worked out to be pretty good for paladins, in terms of doing more overall healing while still not running OOM. He even talked about how the resto druid in his Ulduar raid ran OOM more than he did.

Ashiellia at FHpally had an interesting observation about how the paladin changes actually makes the other healers have to care more about the tanks, and thus their healing group has to work as a team together for the first time in a long time.

Priests and druids were (overall) in a good place in 3.1, so with the other two healing classes being brought closer to where we were standing (and some nerfs that hurt druids & priests overall), I think that the game balance is much closer to where it should be. There will never be a point where every class does exactly an equal percent of healing done on meters, because meters aren’t designed to show similarities or balance between the classes, they are designed to emphasize even the smallest differences.

At the very least, druids aren’t miles ahead of everyone else now, so we can maybe learn how to work together to accomplish our goals, rather than treating healing like a competition. What do you guys think?

Healing in 3.2 – Blog guide updated!

It looks like I finished updating the blog version of my healing guide & pieces of the forum version. My goal is to finish copying over everything to the forum version by the end of the day.

I mainly updated the talent specs, set bonuses, gems, & glyphs – along with some minor text changes in all the sections.  Let me know if I missed something, or if you have any other comments about the new version.

What a Beast

So, this week we got to try out the new boss in the Trial of the Crusader raid instance, both 10 and 25-man. The “Northrend Beasts” fight only took a couple tries before we got it down, so we were able to kill him on both 10-man and 25-man normal mode. It looks like the “heroic” mode doesn’t unlock until you’ve cleared the whole thing on normal mode.  The northrend beasts have a couple interesting things, like running out of the way from Icehowl, which are a lot of fun. However, they feel more like three mini-bosses than one real epic encounter.

The second encounter in the ToC raid instance will be Lord Jaraxxus, who is one tall, angry looking dude.  As far as I can tell, we should be able to do both the beasts & Jaraxxus this week, which means we’ll get a lot of Triumph badges if all the bosses drop 3 each (plus the 2 we get from running heroic 5-man daily quests).

I’ve been so busy with all the new content that I haven’t gotten around to revamping my healing & leveling guides for 3.2 yet. Between running 5-mans and raids almost constantly since the patch came out, along with the daily quests for the tournament & jewelcrafting, and all the RL things that don’t stop just because it’s patch week…. I’ve been really busy lately. Getting my guides in good shape is definitely a priority for me this week. I’ve made minor continuity changes to the forum healing guide version just to not confuse people too much by being out of date, but I really want to sit down and go through it all very, very soon.
